Grad School
Sunday. 6.24.12 12:16 pm
I'm starting to get excited about graduate school. The one I'm applying to is in Westminster, CO. It seems to be a really nice town: great dog parks, nice housing developments and some swanky (but not too pricy) shopping areas. It is the home of the Butterfly Pavilion and within a stone's throw of Water World. True, it's not super close to the library district's I'd hope to be working for, but with a commute of only 45 minutes, it might be worth it.

Well, we'll see. I've got my application filed, I sent off my transcripts and now, all I need is to get two recommendations and write a statement of purpose. Wish me luck!

My Imaginary Perfect Day
Wednesday. 6.6.12 1:56 pm
I wake up in the morning to a faint tugging on the edge of my blanket. Monzi is up and away and wants her morning walk. I give her a wan smile and then open my arms to give her a hug. The great fluff that is Monzi runs into my arms and I slide out of the bed, laughing and fending off her tongue. I get her leash and we go on a walk.

The morning is fresh and there are only a few birds out. I take my time looking at the blades of grass while she runs ahead, checking on me whenever I fall out of her sight. She is excited about the walk, but shes more excited about what is to come.

We finally finish our walk and then climb into the back of my Subaru. The hatch back was big enough for me to fit all of Monzis kennel. I close the back and we drive out to the lake. I open Monzis cage and throw a tennis ball into the water. She runs out there splashing and then swims back to me. I meet a client on the dock. He has a Labrador retriever that he is trying to teach to like the water like Monzi does. We spend a couple of ours getting the dog used to the water. He is starting to get the hang of this whole thing when it comes to the end of our session and I say goodbye to our client.

Next, we load up into the car and go home. Monzi is soaking wet, so I give her a bath before we go to our next encounter: the school. We take Monzi to a middle school in town and talk to them about dog care and show all the kids Monzis cleverer tricks. They are absolutely amazed and everyone gets a chance to pet her, which is Monzis favorite part about this experience.

After that, Monzi and I go home. I throw the tennis ball a little for her in our yard and when shes tired, we go inside and I read books about dog training, behavioral modeling, motivation and so forth. Before long, we are both ready for bed. She sleeps in her bed in the corner, I sleep in mine and we fall asleep to do something similar the next day.

Books in Transit
Wednesday. 4.25.12 1:33 pm
So my books are supposed to come, today. Actually, amazon says that they left the post office and have been dragged around by the mail carrier since 9:00 this morning. Where are you oh booksie books!

These are kind of a valuable assortment of books. I got a new book, "The Explosive Child" for the explosive child in my life, "Fred Stays with Me" for the children of divorce in my life, "Beyond the Sling" just because I want to know more about attachment parenting and then finally "The Highly Sensitive Person" for... well... me. I am very excited about reading them, which is funny, because I have kind of been lagging on the whole reading fiction piece. I currently have Anathem, Sacre Bleu and Windup Girl to get through before I can even think about other books... but of course that isn't going to happen. I am just going to get to other books.

This, I feel, is why I need a two week vacation. Books are just hard to read when you can't 1.) take a whole week to stop freaking out about work and then 2.) take the second week to plow through the remainder of your reading material. That said, I am a colossally slow reader. That means, that I would have to take a month in order to finish it. This is why I either need a time machine or a time stopper. That way, I can either go back in time and finish my reading and catch up on my sleep OR I can stop time and do the same things. Sadly, this discussion is proceeding to more and more unlikely scenarios leading to the conclusion that I am wanting what I can't have.

So, I'm going to go to the porcelain throne, bring one of my books and wait for my new ones to arrive :( These are times, although I am abashed to admit it, where I am a little bummed that the world does not revolve around me.
