bummer

man, not one of the good weeks.. by right this time should have finished my last exercise and should be very injured by elated. However, doesn't seem the case for me. Fell out during the exercise due to exhaustion i think, sort of blanked out or something at one of the checkpoints during the hot weather, next thing i knew was people around me making noise, but thankfully got better after they forced everyone to rest, thought i was ok to continue so decided to go on because if not the rest of my team would have to carry my load, which i would have felt too guilty for them to do that. After a while, my head started to hurt real bad, felt like it was being compressed into itself, so they brought me to the medical centre and next thing i knew was that the medic diagnosed me with photophobia - something about being afraid of bright lights, which would have been pretty dumb because i told him it was the lights that was right in my eyes, but he seemed to think it was more serious than my throbbing head, became the talk of town after that hai.. then they sent me to another centre with the doctor around, first time on the ambulance, and the doctor suspected i had hand foot mouth disease (i was like wtf!) cos someone else had it and they were taking precautions or something.. ended with mc and fall out from the exercise, thankfully my team was smart and they left my stuff there for the recovery to return it to me instead of carrying it.

Hai.. what would have been a happy end has now been marred by the incident.. total casualty rate amounted to about 1/4 of the strength, half of which is heat related injuries, all occured around one location, bloody hell.. almost literally... went back to camp to welcome everyone back, bruised and battered, but they had earned their stripes. Suddenly we became the talk of the camp again, having survived the ordeal and earned their respect. Felt a little left out, not from my peers, but more about myself... could have went out with a bang, but stopped short of a wimper, guess if i would have any regret, it would be that i was unable to continue on with the rest of my friends.. even as there are rumours that they might conduct another one due to the high amount of casualties, the feeling still wouldn't be the same if i were to complete it the first time.. haiz..

fun in camp
Saturday, April 15, 2006
well this past week has certainly been fun, probably one of the better weeks at least, partly due to the Good Friday holiday which gained us another day of rest and relaxation (yay!).

On the other hand, great thing was that there wasn't much to do for the week except attend lectures after lectures, though time passes slowly, but still quite relaxed, cept for the freezing temperatures and the z monster we have to fight. Im becoming such a couch potato. Every opportunity i get i'll head to the mess to watch some tv with the tv gang, between lessons, after meals and during nights lol. Television is God sent! hail!

Mondays - Superband, So you think you can dance
Tuesday - Can't remember
Wednesday - American Idol, Chicago
Thursday - Booked out
Fridays - reserved for amazing race or survivor i think

so much to watch! our fav day would be mondays cos we get two great programmes to talk about haha cant wait, just hope got nothing on during the nights this week although i think will be busier. Two more weeks till my final exercise and 4 more till i go back to SAFTI, everyone's pretty excited and getting into the relaxed mood, but last exercise is gonna be tough, involving a lot of walking with heavy loads, heard was like 25kg average person load! gosh... think the last time i tried walking so far i ended up not being able to walk for 2 weeks, both my soles blistered and bled, lost 8 out of 10 toenails in the process, shudder...

quite a good week partly because we got 2 rats this week. First rat was trying to run up the wall when we came back from lessons and my friend smacked it with the bag, it got trampled in the process and i finally got to kick a rat! The second one was caught in the cage, been a while since we caught one and we decided to let it run the 'gauntlet', to give it a fair chance of survival, but unfortunately, its freedom only lasted less than 10 seconds. It met its fate at the end of the broom, and then it started bleeding which was gross... noone wanted to clear up and i ended up as the remains collection branch. Don still claims the rat wasn't given a fair trial, we tried a couple of times, but think the verdict's still the same, method of execution still needs more variety.

People wonder how we live with the rats, i say it just takes getting used to. My friend's toenail got bitten off while he was sleeping, sounds kinda far fetched but still plausible, those rats aren't normal, freaking commandos i swear. They march all over our stuff leaving footprints everywhere and love to come from the top ala airborne rats. Takes a team of dedicated, motivated and good looking mother sons to fight the good fight. This week's spoils: 2, which brings our total frags to about 7 i think, with top fragger still marlon, congratulations!

Weeks are just so long!!

back again.. and soon to be gone again, scheduled for guard this sunday doh..
cant believe how time seems to slow down in camp, seems to be getting worse lately don't know why also. Probably because we're sleeping less also, with planning work and other stuff to do. Had our route march at east coast park which was pretty cool, definately a new experience, but felt like some zoo animal when everyone just keep staring at you. Of course we had some people taunting us, but was quickly settled when our boss stepped in. Some even thought we were commandos or something LOL..

anyway, we also seem to have tons of parties lately. First was some anniversary parade thingy, then last week was the mess opening. This week we had some anniversary dinner cum karaoke which we performed again, this time in front of the perm staff as well and to round off the week with 'happy hour', no alcohol but tons of pizza and kfc lol, not too bad..

As promised, some photos from the mess opening.. doofus photographer only took a few photos when he's supposed to be covering the whole event.

Presenting, the former "The mystic rats and the psychadelic rabbits" - now known as "The mystic rats and the psychadelic penguins"

cheers

what a week
Saturday, March 4, 2006
been a pretty sleepless week for me. everyone knew there was gonna be a turnout but just didn't know which day so every night some bozo would try to set alarm clock just to check; waking everyone up in the process as well. As each day pass, everyone gets more paranoid, rumours start spreading that it's gonna be that day and stuff, pretty annoying after a while. Then wed night had planning for the next day's exercise so didn't sleep too. Thurs exercise kanna f by instructor even though it was our first time doing it, heard that he told someone he didn't like our this batch anyway. but thurs exercise was by far the most fun we had. Just sat in a rover the whole day, deployed at some distant location and the only activity was just talking and directing the driver lol. and so, everyone lacking sleep, slept like logs when we returned and just so happened the turnout was on that night as well haha, even though we knew, noone could wake up before that. Yup, and finally got our blue beret weee..

Had mess opening during the night also, i performed together with some friends and thankfully it turned out not too bad... will try to get pictures of the night to post up here soon i hope. Only bad point was that everyone got pissed drunk as we were forced to drink and stuff. Even at the point where we were really high already, the seniors stepped in to offer us even more drinks, and to the extent of putting multiple raw eggs into the beer! The toilet was pretty busy after that... the final straw was the vodka they brought in and my friend downed close to 12 shots on top of all the beer which made him pass out in some remote location where we had to search for him in the morning lol. another was so drunk he went up to my major on course and hugged him!

hmm on to more serious stuff.. think even though army takes you away from ur family and stuff, sometimes i really do think my life is much better being in camp than at home.. got 'nagged' by my mother the whole day today, and come to think of it, probably the first time since i went in whereas it would become a monthly affair when i was back home, and the topic usually would derive from money, or the lack of it.. uni fees, future allowance, what if next time no job, want to get married, blah blah... not that she's wrong, just that probably she's absolutely right, im spending money like nobody's business when i should be saving it for the future...

Sometimes i also wonder what exactly the kind of person i am.. on one hand i do enjoy company while the other i do find myself quite a loner... i still find that i like to keep a lot of feelings and things to myself, probably something that im used to for very long. I feel so confused, family and friends with expectations of me to do something or being something, but in the end i feel im never quite good enough, which reminds of of the song iris.. don't know how to end this but i think i'll just end here for today, dont' wanna think anymore..
