Prince Harry to serve in Iraq
Thursday. 2.22.07 3:36 pm
By TARIQ PANJA Associated Press Writer

Britain's Prince Harry salutes his father Prince Charles (not shown) as he leaves, following The Sovereign's Parade at the Royal Military Academy, where Harry received his military commission at Sandhurst, England in this Wednesday, April 12, 2006 file photo. The Ministry of Defense ended speculation that had been swirling for about a week by announcing Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, the 22-year-old prince will be sent to Iraq with his Blues and Royals regiment in May or June. Harry, a second lieutenant, will assume a troop commander's role.
LONDON (AP) - He's the redheaded son of the late Princess Diana, the rowdy royal known more for dancing until dawn than waking for battle. But Britain's party prince, Harry, is getting his wish and going to Iraq with his Blues and Royals regiment.

Royal officials announced Thursday that 22-year-old Harry would be deployed to Basra, confirming the tabloid speculation about the future of the best-recognized tank commander in Britain. His regiment is expected to complete a six-month tour.

The prince, a second lieutenant, has been trained to lead a team of 12 men in four armored reconnaissance vehicles, and could become the first royal to see active combat since his uncle Prince Andrew served in the Falklands war against Argentina in 1982.

Word of the deployment follows only one day after Prime Minister Tony Blair said British troop numbers in Iraq will be cut by 1,600 in the coming months. The daily tabloid newspaper, the Sun, opined _ "1,600 out ... One in."

Britain will hand over most of security in the Basra area to Iraqi security forces, concentrating its troops at the city's palace and air base. Iraqi insurgent groups looking to target Cornet Wales _ as his rank is called in the Blues and Royals _ will not have to look far to find him _ which has led to concern his presence could mean extra risks for his men.

Salmonella in my Peanut Butter
Thursday. 2.22.07 3:10 pm

PETER PAN RECALL

Peanut butter is supposedly as safe as flowers – well it was, because nowadays eating from the wrong jar could very well send you to the hospital. Although salmonella is usually associated with eggs, chickens, undercooked meat, reptiles or unwashed hands and eating, peanut butter has become a source too.

The infamous contamination at the ConAgra plant may have been caused by dirty jars or equipment, according to government and industry officials. In the production process, peanuts are usually heated to temperatures that are so high that they kill germs, therefore they can’t be suspected of having generated the contamination.

A Texas couple filed charges against ConAgra after their 5-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son got sick. The lawsuit seeks damages for medical bills, pain and suffering, and caps the damages at $75,000 for each child, their lawyer said.

It's one of at least three lawsuits filed against ConAgra Foods, which is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter made at its Sylvester, Georgia, plant. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 288 persons, from 39 states, had become infected with salmonella since last August. About 85 percent of the infected people said they ate peanut butter.

No deaths have been reported.

Thursday. 2.22.07 11:31 am

Jack Bauer has this habit of using the word damn it in his hit TV show 24. The game is designed to have all players take a shot (your poison of choice) everytime your hear him say the word damn it in the show. I think if you were to watch a marathon of 24 you will be stone drunk after the first two episodes!

Slaying Dragon Breath
Wednesday. 2.21.07 9:36 pm
We've all found ourselves chatting with someone whose breath could easily wilt a flower. With more than 90 million people suffering from chronic bad breath (also called halitosis), that's a lot of wilted flowers. If you (or someone you regularly smooch) has an attack of bad breath that even Altoids won't fix, try these eight simple tips to fix the problem.

1. Don't let your tongue become a dirty carpet - A clean tongue goes a long way to warding off bad breath, says Stephen Z. Wolner, a dentist in private practice in New York City. "Your tongue microscopically is like a shaggy carpet. There are millions of filaments on your tongue that trap tiny food particles and bacteria," he says. Get in the habit of regularly cleaning your tongue using a toothbrush, the edge of a spoon, or a tongue cleaner. If you have any mouth guards or oral devices, make sure to clean them thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth.

2. Chew gum like it's going out of style - "When you chew gum it makes you salivate, and the more saliva you have in your mouth the fewer bacteria you have. It not only mechanically washes bacteria out, but we have antiseptic and enzymes in our saliva that kill bacteria," says Wolner.

3. Drink more water - You might not even notice you're thirsty, he says, so make drinking water a habit, because water will help keep the bacteria in your mouth to a minimum. Drinking water has a lot of health benefits, and preventing bad breath is one of them.

ENVIGA!!
Wednesday. 2.21.07 5:17 pm

Enviga

calorie burner Peach
Cost: $? 12 oz
Active ingredients: Caffeine, Green Tea Extract
Rating: 6.5 out of 10

Enviga is the first drink from Nestea and Coca cola, which is after studies claiming to actually help you burn calories. This might not exactly be an energy drink but with 100mg of Caffeine, it definitely fits in with other energy drinks, which range from 80mg to 280mg of caffeine per serving. This is about the same as an average cup of coffee which contains 80-140 milligrams. So does this drink help you to burn calories as the can claims? "The cans per day of Enviga have been shown to increase calorie burning by 60-100 calories in a healthy normal weight 18-35 year olds."

I don't know I guess you would have to drink three cans a day for a month or so, a challenge I might have to take on just to give this a real test. Well as an energy drink, it seems weaker than most, but has a fairly pleasant peach taste, with only 5 calories it has a pretty good flavor. I think the biggest problem is the slightly pungent aftertaste, it tastes a bit like sweat, others didn't notice this after taste, which can probably better be described by saying if you just clumped up all the little hairs on the outside of a peach and put those in your mouth you would have this bitter odd flavor, luckily the aftertaste doesn't last long and the peach green tea flavor is far more noticeable. I don't think this will hit well with the young kids running around and staying up all night, but if your looking for a afternoon burst of energy after lunch and you want a low calorie tasty drink, I guess it might be worth giving this drink a shot, especially if you already like tea.

JACK BAUER WOULD NEVER DRINK ENVIGA!

iliotibial band syndrome
Wednesday. 2.21.07 11:30 am
I have been training in karate as I always have been and I have also been working out at the gym. I have been trying to lose weight and tone my muscles. So anyhow, for about a month now I have noticed that my knee has been causing me problems. At one time it buckled during my karate workout.

Shortly after that I felt pain in my hip. I went to the chiropractor and asked him to adjust me knee and he kind of looked at me strangely. But I still felt alot of pain the next day. Shortly after that I felt burning in my lower back. I was wondering what the hell is going on!!?? I went to the chiropractor again yesterday and found out that I have a "t-band injury". What is it?? This is what I found.

ITB - iliotibial band syndrome - the BIG 5 - common running injuries
Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Definition: Pain and inflammation on the outside of the knee, where the iliotibial band (a muscle on the outside of the thigh) becomes tendinous, and results in a friction syndrome by rubbing against the femur (thigh bone) as it runs alongside the knee joint.

illitibiol band syndromeSymptoms:
Initially, a dull ache 1-2 kilometres into a run, with pain remaining for the duration of the run. The pain disappears soon after stopping running, later, severe sharp pain which prevents running pain is worse on running downhills, or on cambered surfaces pain may be present when walking up or downstairs.
Local tenderness and inflammation

Causes:
Anything that causes the leg to bend inwards, stretching the ITB against the femur overpronation (feet rotate too far inward on impact) tightness of the ITB muscle lack of stretching of the ITB incorrect or worn shoes excessive hill running (especially downhills) and running on cambered surfaces overtraining

Bullwinkle is going to stomp somebody
Tuesday. 2.20.07 10:00 pm
Towns residents chase moose
February 20th, 2007 at 06:36 pm

In the North Idaho city of Sandpoint the police are telling residents to stop chasing the moose. During the past few weeks, the Sandpoint Police Department has received dozens of phone calls each day reporting moose inside city limits. Area residents have taken to chasing the moose. Police Chief Mark Lockwood said.

The towns residents are sharing the city with about three to five moose. It’s not all that uncommon for moose to come into areas with a lower elevation in the winter months as the snow is usually not as deep.

“When these animals roam into the city, they can become frightened and disoriented, making them more dangerous than if they were encountered in the wild,” Lockwood said.

One woman pushing a jogging stroller recently chased after a moose in an attempt to photograph it, with a pack of people close behind. If things don’t change, Lockwood said police may have to cite residents for “molesting wildlife.”

“Do not approach any moose, even if it seems quiet and gentle,” Lockwood said. “If approached repeatedly, even by the best-intentioned onlookers, it may become aggressive. Sooner or later Bullwinkle is going to stomp somebody.”

iPhone will change the PC world
Tuesday. 2.20.07 7:40 pm
According to Macworld, iPhone will change the PC world.

iPhone adds new hotness by taking a radical leap forward in UI technology.

1. Multi-touch: A lot of people now think Apple invented multi-touch—the idea that a touch-screen can respond to two or more points of control at once. In fact, researchers have been developing multi-touch technologies for more than a decade.

Multi-touch on a PC user interface is as powerful as “multi-touch” in real life. Imagine if you had to go through life interacting with the world using just one fingertip. Dialing the phone would be OK, but picking up the receiver would be a problem. Multi-touch lets you ”pick up” on-screen objects, turn them around, resize them and do other useful things.

2. Gestures: Current generation touch-screen devices already have rudimentary gestures. In fact, even the Apple Newton, one of the first personal digital assistants, supported gestures. If you circled text while writing on the Newton, the circled word would then be “selected.” That’s a gesture. Interestingly, multi-touch amplifies the power of gestures by an order of magnitude. For example, you can put two fingers on the left and right side of a photograph, then use the gesture of moving your fingers apart to instantly enlarge the picture.

3. Physics: Second-generation UIs have folders, trash cans and documents that represent physical objects. But they don’t act like physical objects. They don’t move like they have weight, mass and momentum. When you slide a folder across your Windows desktop, it doesn’t slow down gradually, but stops the instant you release the mouse button. When you crash an icon against other desktop objects, they don’t scatter like bowling pins. If they did, your mind would more readily accept them as real objects.

4. 3-D: Some UI objects in both Vista and OS X have 3-D properties. For example, you might be able to turn a document around and see what’'s on the back, or look at cascaded documents from the side, which helps you select and organize them. For the most part, however, current generation UIs are profoundly 2-D.

5. Minimization of icons: Icons are the central element of today’s operating systems and represent folders, documents and applications in their closed state. When you click on them to open, the icon is still there, but clicking opens the item and loads it into memory. Next-generation operating systems will make items in their open state—not their closed state represented by icons—the central element. You’ll be able to shrink or grow just about any object almost infinitely in either direction, but size will be fluid, rather than binary—items will be shown in degrees of largeness, rather than either open or closed.

The combination of these elements means that the UI practically disappears. And so does the learning curve for basic use. A child will be able to walk up to a third-generation PC and start playing around with it.
