Princess of Mars
Wednesday. 3.20.13 12:16 pm
I've been reading Princess of Mars. It's a GREAT book! It's one of those books that you want to finish so that you can read it all over again. Sometimes you've got to love novelist suggestions... Anyway, so John Carter, 6 foot whatever, majorly handsome, spends the first fifty pages trying to find some decent clothes... Has this beautiful thing to say about love:

"So this was love! I had escaped it for all the years I had roamed the five continents and their encircling seas; in spite of the beautiful women and urging opportunity; in spire of half-desire for love and a constant search for my ideal, it has remained for me to fall furiously and hopelessly in love with a creature from another world.." (Burroughs, 99)

".... but on a mac"
Monday. 3.18.13 1:06 pm
I have to admit, the switch over to Mac was initially not very hard. I mean, I hated working with macs in graphic design school, but then I started to love/them and then I started to love them. The thing is, now all my Google queries are like this: "How to I (insert PC thing) on a mac". Like, "What is MS Paint... on a mac" or "What is notepad... on a mac"

Because, Mac, they have 'notepad' and 'paint', but they don't let you use and abuse the programs quite in the same way. Mac thinks that notepad is actually for taking notes! Hahaha. On your computer! AHAHAHA, what a laugh! Sticky notes, on your computer! Why would anyone want to do that? When they can WRITE HTML CODE AND SAVE IT AS A DIFFERENT FILE TYPE! Or use it to strip all the text formatting or use it to write JAVA or CSS or write a printable grocery list without having to load up word, or when you want to write something really small and squish it into the bottom corner of your screen so you can read it while you monkey around on the internet.

Then, MS Paint... probably the most useful program in the world. Oh? You want to steal that photo you saw on that one website, but when you right click on it, it yells at you? Screen capture -> import into paint! What? You are too lazy to wait for photoshop to load but you want to crop that dinky photo of yours -> MS PAINT! Still, there are ways... there must be ways.

So ready..
Monday. 3.18.13 10:12 am
I'm so freaking ready to have a dog, again. Ready in all ways except financial, that is. Spensive computer and vacays aside, I simply don't have the salary for regular room and board. That's not a secret, it's just the way it is. So, I'm doing what anybody does, looking for more income streams. My point is it can't come soon enough. Let's just face it, I'm not just a dog person. I'm a Dog Person. If I were to have a familiar, it would be a dog. If I were to have a familiar in the Golden Compass universe where the animal represents an aspect of your soul? It would still be a dog. It would be a white german shepherd. It's like walking around with your arm cut off, and I know people can live just fine like that, but that doesn't mean that, if they were able to earn enough money and get a nice backyard in order to get their arm back, they wouldn't! *Sigh* I am whining, I get it, but look at this face:

Dogs on Facebook
Friday. 3.15.13 10:40 am
Sometimes, I think subscribing to dog rescue groups is fun, but every once in a while, it's like torture. There was a posting today about a dog's "last will and testament", I skimmed it, but it didn't take long before I started thinking about my own dead dog and it made me quite sad. You can see why people say that it is your "loss". I think in many ways, things that have died act in our day to day functionality as things that have been lost, but (and I know it is patently obvious) lost things have a distinct benefit over dead things. You see, when things are lost, you have a hope of turning around a corner and saying, "Oh my, that's where I left you." But my old dog was not lost, she was never lost, because whenever I wanted to find her, I would just call her name and she would be there. I miss that dog.

Budgeting and adventures
Monday. 3.11.13 4:44 pm
So, my computer crapped out on me for the second time in three months. It doesn't want to turn on. I could guess at a hundred different ways I mistreated the darn thing, but the fact remains that I have savings for crap like this and this might just be the time to use it. Now, I am not unconcerned. Injudicious spending could wipe out my funds leaving me flat broke for the next car malfunction, dental crisis or the like. But, skimping early means the same problem I'm having now three years down the road.

So, I went to the Mac store. The guy answered all my questions in the affirmative, which says very little because I have to admit I googled everything before I got there. I can get a Mac, install Ubuntu on it and run both OSs. Virus protection is included in the software updates and I am just going to ask Adobe cross-grading my CS3. I can use my PC hard drive as an external, but he thinks that's sort of dumb, outside of the fact that just bought it. Costs? 1,100 for the machine with 400$ for the crossgrade. Ouch! And we haven't started with apple care and file transfer fees. Still, I could start coding in command c and maybe have the machine for up to 8 years. If I bought my old comp again, I'd be looking at 1300$ over a 6 year period, virus headaches included. Still maybe the next one would last longer seeing as it won't have to fly to three different continents and a dozen different countries. Good times Tulip, good times.

Next I went to the ddfl. I was debating it, flipped for it, and decided to go. I think it pushed me over the edge in my decision to rescue. The dogs were all so friendly and healthy looking. Plus a lot of them were house-trained. I think I liked this long haired dachshund mix the best. She was brown and white and seemed super-chill. She isn't even on the website, yet. She came to greet me, but she wasn't desperate or anything.. Just friendly and chill. Small enough to live with anywhere, too. I could call her Buttercup and fill out my power puff girls ;)

Anyway... Typing on an itouch takes FOREVER.
