Barren Illusion
"If the day and the night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet-scented herbs, is more elastic, more starry, more immortal- that is your success. All nature is your congratulation, and you have cause momentarily to bless yourself. The greatest gains and values are farthest from being appreciated. We easily come to doubt if they exist. We soon forget them. They are the highest reality. Perhaps the facts most astounding and most real are never communicated by man to man. The true harvest of my daily life is somewhat as intangible and indescribable as the tints of morning or evening. It is a little star-dust caught, a segment of the rainbow which I have clutched." - Henry David Thoreau

I MADE MY OWN BUTTER!

Too bad I still have a giant stick of unsalted Danish butter and four sticks of King Kullen butter. (Why the hell do I have so much butter? It's not like I use it daily in my food or on my skin.) BUT I MADE MY OWN BUTTER!

(That's me!)

Mozzarella sticks are delicious
martes, 22 de mayo, 2007
My first cousin once removed got married over the weekend. And that's as far as I understand in terms of English kinship terminology... maybe because I'm unaccustomed to it, but it's too confusing. Like... my mom's first cousin's kid is my second cousin... I think. Okay, my head hurts. I'm just going to keep calling my newly-married first cousin once removed biu gu, as I always have.

The food was okay. I can never understand how abalone is such a delicacy. The wedding cake was too sweet and uninspired. I swear I'm not a foodie! But I've tried regular cake and pie that is more delicious. At our table, we emptied nearly every dish, but around us, lots of plates were still full and they asked for the waiters to bag them up. Methinks they deliberately did it to get free food.

Now I have even more white relatives by marriage. (Though more distant this time around.)

And the bubonic plague is in Denver o_o

I LOVE CHEESE
domingo, 30 de marzo, 2008
Sounds like a grand and sweeping general statement, but I think it's true. I love the dry, crumbly Parmesan along with the soft, crumbly farmer's cheese; from the off-white mozarella to the blue-veined Roquefort. Cottage cheese, Brie, Camembert, Cheddar (mild and sharp), Cheddar Jack, Muenster, Asiago, Pecorino, Fontina, Ricotta, Colby, Monterey Jack, Feta, Provolone, Gorgonzola, cream cheese, Swiss, and more -- I have not eaten a cheese I haven't liked, although who knows if that one variety is out there, waiting for me to hate it since there are hundreds, if not thousands, of varieties from all over the world. I am not a cheese connoisseur by any means, I just loves my cheeses.

I love yogurt
jueves, 24 de julio, 2008
So I tried making my own! It's really easy:

Gradually heat milk until it's boiling. Remove from heat and wait until the temperature drops to about 120F/34C (use a candy thermometer; I didn't have one so I used a meat thermometer :3). Take off the milk skin, then pour the warm milk in a jar with a few tablespoons of plain yogurt. I still had a layer of yogurt left at the bottom of the two-pound plastic tub I bought, so I just dumped my milk in that. Mix well, cover, then put it in an oven at about the same temperature (120) or use an oven that has a pilot light. After six to seven hours, it's done. (A longer time will result in thicker yogurt.)

I'm sure there are many different recipes out there on the internet. I'm gonna try another next time, or maybe try straining it to get Greek yogurt aka labneh.

Who hates yogurt? I know some people do.

Tainted milk...
domingo, 21 de septiembre, 2008
...is even in my beloved White Rabbit candy!

I've not had any in years, though, and now this story is making me crave for some.

I think it won't be long till another Chinese product is tainted or something or other. Their industrialization so far has been going unchecked, and they need some hardcore regulation. All the idustrialized nations went through it, I just think this is a much larger scale. And news today travels at light speed.

Also known as fancy hobo tomato soup
martes, 22 de junio, 2010
I made some bootleg gazpacho for lunch tomorrow, because it is really really hot and I am also really really lazy. My recipe:

  • Cream of tomato soup
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Diced onions
  • Minced garlic
  • Canned mixed vegetables
  • Lemon juice
  • Black pepper
  • Hot sauce
  • Whatever the hell else herbs & seasonings you like

Throw everything in a pot. Be so bootleg as to not even own a mortar and pestle, instead using a wooden rice paddle scoop to crush the victuals. Refrigerate overnight, then figure out how to bring soup to work that doesn't involve a huge-ass thermos.
