Did Daz and JD Make The "So-So" Gangsta Experiment Work?
    Friday. 9.29.06 1:31 pm

Jerrmaine Dupri served as executive producer of the album. The first single is "On Some Real S***" featuring Rick Ross, and the beat on that joint is fire. I still haven't figured out where this alliance is headed, I know that there is a plan, I just haven't put my finger on it.

I'm confused because I thought that the record would have more of JD's influence with respect to the records overall flavor. It still sounds like "traditional" Daz Dillinger production and flow. Therefore, I guess their arrow is aimed out to the west coast.

Now on the production end of things, there's no denying Daz's skills, arguably Top 5 in the game right now. Afterall, he did learn from THE BEST in Dr. Dre. But lyrically....I'm telling you, can you imagine a Daz beat alongside some Redman, Lil Wayne, or T.I. vocals (on a full album).

The So So Gangsta album is a follow-up to Daz' 2000 sophomore disc "R.A.W.," which was released through his indie label Dogg Pound Records.

JD relocated So So Def to Virgin last January when he was named president of urban music at the label.

My ultimate question is this... Will Daz be able to push units here in Atlanta? Will we ever recognize a West Coast artists for his skills, and not his accent?

wtf?! top 5, u gotta be fuckin wit us right? ne way ima still cop this daz album

Posted by: dtp at September 28, 2006 11:37 AM

To me THE DAZ PRODUCTION CARRIES THE ALBUM. Most of the JERMAINE DUPRI SONGS ARE WHAT FUCK IT UP. Why is he in the background ad libbing on half the songs when it could easily be Snoop, Kurupt etc. Dogg Pound have their own style of ad libs and how they make songs. PICTURE JERMAINE DUPRI DOING YOUNG JEEZY'S AD LIBS INSTEAD OF HIM.
I'm glad it's balanced though. Jermaine Dupri should be trying to go ahead and get a piece of the west coast sound while they get money - not the other way around.
And you're right DAZ IS DEFINITELY A TOP 5 PRODUCER - THE MOST SLEPT ON.

about time SOHH is givin the west some spot light......thank you blog writer!

and the album is fire(a couple of skippers),but fire nonetheless.

the beat for the song "All I Need" is heated along wit "On Some Real Sh*t".
The collabo wit Kurupt is clean too...

Props to the blog writer for shining some light on the left coast. peace!

    Lil Kim

Lil Kim is set to take the stage at this year's VH1 Hip-Hop Honors in a tribute to pioneering rapper MC Lyte.

The Brooklyn-born MC will be rocking the mic to honor her fellow Brooklynite in what will be her first performance since being released from prison.

As previously reported by SOHH, the rapper was convicted of perjury in 2005 and served 10 months in jail in connection with a shooting that took place outside of New York's Hot 97 studios in 2001.

The Queen Bee will perform MC Lyte's hit "Lyte As A Rock" at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors, which will take place on October 7 in New York City.

"MC Lyte is at the top of the list when you talk about hip-hop pioneers," Lil' Kim said in a statement issued on Tuesday. "She paved the way for myself and any of today's greatest MCs. I'm honored to have the opportunity to show my respect and how she influenced me."

Lil Kim will not be the only one paying her respect to legendary hip-hop artists during the event. Ludacris, OutKast, Diddy, Da Brat, Fat Joe and Lil Jon will also be participating in this year's festivities as they show their appreciation for ground breaking artists like Ice Cube, the Wu-Tang Clan, Afrika Bambaataa, Russell Simmons, Rakim, The Beastie Boys and the late Eazy-E.

The show is set to air on VH1 on October 17

Cassie Still Has A "Long Way 2 Go," Beyonce Gets the "Greenlight"
    Thursday. 9.14.06 1:18 am
Amidst all the hoopla of Beyonce being certified gold during her first week of sales of the much-talked about sophomore effort B'Day, Bad Boy, the little engine that could, released Cassie's second video, "Long Way 2 Go."

Overall the video is pretty good. Emphasis on "pretty." The styling, the choreography, the Ryan Leslie cameo.... I get it. But for some reason, Cassie ain't really selling it. Or not the way you'd think someone with all these smoke and mirrors should. She seems even more rehearsed than ever before. By now we are all past her mediocre singing (and that is being generous, 'cause these days chicks like Monica's singing is just mediocre), but yeah we are over her mediocre singing. So what's left... Hair? Nails? Makeup? I mean she's got all the right ingredients for one of the best bukakkes this side of Osaka, but seemingly this girl is playing dress up when we'd much rather her undress.

Yep... she's got a "long a way to go." And for some reason, I don't think she's even worth the bullet.

However the one chick that get's the greenlight, whether by hook or crook is Beyonce. Yeah, yeah, I am as tired of typing her name as you are of reading it, hearing it, and finding new variations or words that rhyme with it. But hateration aside, one must bow down to Sasha's twin sister. Although she is the least favorite of the twins, she did score one of the highest debuts this year and she did it her way. No Sasha, no stripper-like choreography and all in that Target-like brand known as Dereon.

Brace yourselves we are in for at least another full year of Beyonce's force feeding. She said on MTV that she is solely responsible for the success or failure of this CD. Every dog has their day, but damn seems like everyday lately has been B'Day.

To make it easier on our sensitive stomachs we might as well jump on and ride this ride until it's out of gas.

Check out her peformance of "Greenlight" on "Good Morning America."

Also check out this interesting piece written on Bey's career.

But wait, there's more.... We know how to keep it moving. Check out our new joint of the day... emphasis on new. It's from Ruben Studdard and is said to be his first single from his forthcoming studio album.

Posted by: Layla at September 13, 2006 10:14 AM

    What up, all?
Well, I'm gonna need Beyonce to stay out of my iTunes b/c Green Light is the only song I have downloaded so far to decide if I want the album and then she releases it.
Cassie? I have to say that the song is catchy and they did right by coming with a song where she sings only a chorus, but I'm still not sold. And PS: Why is she looking at chick's profiles on her laptop? LOL
And Ruben Studdard just gets no play for me.

A Tribe Called Quest and Outkast Collabo?
    Thursday. 9.14.06 1:27 am
DJ Drama has put out word that the members of A Tribe Called Quest and OutKast want to do a super-collaboration mixtape as well. We've heard about it for a minute but the buzz is still circulating so it might be going down.

    'Dre 3000:
"I was talking toQ-Tip the other day, and he said, 'Come to the studio. I was going to ask him if it would be all right to do me, Big Boi, Tip and Phife on one record."

    From Phife:
"I was just in L.A. and we went to Big Boi's [video] shoot for 'Morris Brown,' " said Tribe's Phife Dawg, who definitely wants Outkast to appear on his upcoming solo LP, Songs in the Key of Phife. "I view them as one of the most amazing groups ever. They never were followers. They set their own path, they made their own lane in this game, and you always have to appreciate that. That's what makes true artistry to me, when you take risks."

So look out for that, this could be a major one. Let's make it happen. Either way Drama is said to be working on an exclusive 'Kast mixtape.

And incase you weren't feeling the Idlewild joint (I don't know why you wouldn't though), Outkast has a mixtape out with all the classics on it. It's a two-disc CD hosted by DJ Scream and it's on point, I promise.

Also keep your eye on these mixtapes already out...

Jay and Bey Reign over Nas and Kelis? Monica is no Whitney
    Friday. 11.17.06 10:34 am

So what did you all think about BET's first Hip-Hop Music Awards? I am very interested in your thoughts and opinions. I have already spoken on how I felt about the show. Watching it last night didn't make me feel any different. But there's one thing I just can't ignore. What was up with Katt Williams opening monologue addressing Jay-Z and Beyoncé as "King and Queen" and Nas and Keilis and "Prince and Princes" what kind of bullshit is that?

And now that I think about it — where the hell was Nas?? I knew somebody major was missing but I couldn't put my finger on it!!! I watched BET's 'Access Granted" the other night as they selected Monica's new song "A Dozen Roses" to feature. Why in the hell they would choose her is beyond me, but they did, so whatever. Can somebody please hand Monica a sandwich? Since when has bony-skinny ever been sexy? Monica had the opportunity to be the new "Whitney Houston" but she dropped the ball by refusing to compromise her ghetto ass tendencies.

Before any of y'all post a comment demanding my resignation — you know DAMN well ghettoness in Middle America AKA — "white people" just won't fly if you want to be a successful pop singing sensation and don't kid yourself, she wanted that. Anybody in there right mind would.. I'm not saying it's fair but it's the truth.
She chose to go for those manish tattoos, and hood songs over making millions of dollars.

"Boy you remind me, remind me of by Gucci Shoes
Every time you walk pass all the girls be looking at you
You got style just like a Bentley do
And I be loosing my mind evertime I get next to you"

I understand how important it is to be true to yourself and all that but let's keep it real — Whitney Houston was hood as hell, but she understood the nature of the beast/business and made it work.

Sometimes you just have to see the bigger damn picture. You can't tell me that when Monica is sitting on her toilet, doing the #2, deep in thought, that she doesn't regret not making better career decisions.

Check out Monica's new video, "A Dozen Roses."

Is It Over for Slim Thug?
    Sunday. 9.24.06 12:23 pm

I'm bumping "The Interview" as I type this, so let it be known that Rizoh considers Slim Thug one of the few plausible emcees to emerge from the Lone Star state. He gave the Clipse one of their better hooks so far. He also gets bonus points for being one of the most professional performers, and perhaps the most polite of his peers. (Chamillionaire fits this description as well.) That said, Already Platinum was a flop...commercial-wise. I can imagine Thugga in his diamond-encrusted office chair, swisha in hand, looking at his latest soundscan figures, anxiously waiting for the day his album will truly live up to its un-prophetic title.

    But, you know what, Slim?

That tragedy is all in the past now. Steer straight. Look to the future, because it's bleaker than that half-assed rapper from Brooklyn. Let's face it, how many major labels are still willing to give a gold-selling artist a second chance? (Just ask Joe Budden.) It's even worse if that gold-selling disc is your debut. Had The Game not managed to sell 5 million copies of The Documentary, he would probably be back on his old job as Dr. Dre's weed carrier by now. Doesn't matter if you're the next Scarface or the next Rakim, the numbers must make cents for those money-hungry T.I.'s at the majors to give you one more shot.

Unless, of course, Slim's market research ploy is alluring enough to convince Jimmy that Boss of All Bosses (pka Still Platinum) is a sure-shot.

"I thought it [Already Platinum] should have went way farther," he said. "I was an independent artist that did all the work myself. Once I signed a major deal, I kind of felt like, 'I'm signed to a major label, oh, they gonna do all the work now.' But this album I'm gonna work it myself first, I'm gonna do all the work as if they don't exist and whatever they bring to the table, cool."

"The feedback I got from my fans [about the] last album was that they wanted to hear a lot more Houston records. So I worked with people out of Houston, a bunch of producers I came up with. I did like 30 songs with these cats, so I really got the album done. I'm gonna get, like, two from Pharrell and maybe work with a few other big producers, but keep it Houston." (Source: Prohiphop.com)

Personally, I think Slim deserves a shot. For the most part, his craft is a mix of music and message. His album isn't perfect, but he's an embodiment of the only thing lacking from Houston's hip-hop scene at the moment -- intense reality rap. If you're not one of the two people that slept on Already Platinum, you'll understand.

But, let me ask you, the consumer: Will you cop Slim Thug's sophomore album, Boss of all Bosses, if it ever sees the light of day?
