Vin Diesel
Friday. 5.17.13 11:03 am
I've been thinking about... dating lately. There was this picture floating around on Facebook that said, "Don't try to find the right girl, focus on trying to be the right man". That got my wheels turning about the "Law of Attraction" and personal growth and all of that noise and I started to reverse engineer a new me from the people I tend to admire or think "he would be fun to date". Vin Diesel would be a fun guy to date. See, he's a big nerd, into all of that D&D stuff, but he's super ripped, totally hot and ridiculously nice! I mean... it's like wherever you see Vin Diesel show up he's saying something humble or gracious and you think "Wow... that's the kind of guy I want to get to know". Now, I realize that I'm not... movie star girlfriend kind of hot, right? And it's not exactly practical for me to think, "Oh, I'll be a movie star!" but it does make me think about holding myself up to a little bit of a higher standard (not that I don't, it's just unfocused). I mean... why can't I try to be a little bit more humble, to think about what I say and think about how it helps others, how it lifts others up, how it makes other people excited about what we're doing together? That wouldn't be bad for me, would it? Also... quite frankly, if I started lifting a few weights and running on the track a bit more, it wouldn't kill anyone, either. (Although, on the second or third mile, I sure think it would). I guess that's what admiring people is all about, making yourself a little bit... better.

Is Talking to a Librarian Lazy?
Saturday. 5.4.13 4:50 pm
So, I'm getting my MLS. Yeah! In about a year and a half, I will be a full member of the librarian club, which means that I get to talk to other librarians about what they think.

This is the problem: librarians, especially academic librarians, are annoyed by how late students come to them. Students have these amazing research projects and then, one night before its due, they 'stroll in' and expect the librarians to pull off some kind of miracle.

So, I just so happened to be talking to a friend of mine about libraries and librarians. I think she mentioned a project she was doing and I said, "Well, if you start out by asking the librarians, they can give you a ton of resources to get started on your research". "I don't know" she replied, "my parents always taught me that it was lazy to not do my own research."

I gaped. It was not as if my parents taught me something different. I always knew I had to do my own work, it was just that... getting a ton of resources on a certain topic was never part of that equation. If you want to know more about paleontology, you ask a paleontologist, if you want to know more about getting a job, you ask an employer, if you want to know about anything else, you ask a librarian and she will look it up. In fact, looking it up is hardly even giving away the answer, you still have to read the resources and decide if they are what you're looking for.

But it did give me pause to think: do people librarians avoid librarians because they don't want to look lazy?

Odd Dream
Saturday. 5.4.13 10:51 am
I had the oddest dream last night. I was with Doctor Who and we visited a planet just before it was supposedly visited by its God. There was a running joke that I said he was Japanese. He kept on saying that he wasn't Japanese, but Gallifreyan and I would nod and laugh... Well, when he came to the planet God wanted to speak to me. Everyone was, of course, very shocked by this because I was an alien, but they accepted me as being a mouthpiece for their God. Another alien and I went into the inner sanctum and came out with inner truth, and while we were able to answer the core of their questions and all the assembled knew, as we knew, that we had spoken to the one and only God, my internal editing software meant I kept rewriting that scene in my mind trying to get the wording right. After a while, I just gave up and went for purposeful ambiguity. However, during that speech, I mentioned that our other companion and our Japanese friend were, blah, blah, blah, and the Doctor was so frustrated he said, "But I'm BRITISH!" and on cue, I popped up from behind him and said, "See, you are from Earth, now." A Gallifreyan-Earthling.

I can find anything
Wednesday. 5.1.13 3:02 pm
I am thinking about new apps and websites. My first one, of course, was the virtual library network. The second was the "I can find anything" webpage, where you submit a query and we find you some kind of information on it. For instance, "I don't know anything about Thailand" and then we would give you a million resources on Thailand. I think I need to work a little bit more on the title. After all, we can't find your keys or your long lost girlfriend (who put a restraining order on you), but we can find information on pretty much anything. Where are you keys? Here is some research on how people usually lose things and what strategies they use to find them. Where is your long lost girlfriend? Here are resources on getting over old relationships, kicking stalker behavior, and finding new connections. I don't know, just a thought.

How Much is that Doggy in the Window?
Tuesday. 4.30.13 10:51 pm
700$... Yeah, outRAGEous! But, it was an adorable dog. It was a sheltie/papillon mix. The idea is that you have a less delicate dog that is still pretty small and... well totally adorable, and she was totally adorable and she really liked me. (No, it doesn't matter that all dogs like me after about five seconds). She was at the pet store in one of the bins they usually reserve for rabbits and guinea pigs. I reached my hand, she sniffed it, we were friends forever... until I left the store never to return. :(
