BlogActionDay!!.. Sunday, October 15, 2007 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Global warming is caused when there is a build up of gases. These gases comes from the burning fossil fuels such as oil and coal for the generation of thermal electricity, burning forest and farming methods which realize gases into the atmosphere. These green house gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide, and CFCs, creating a warming effect known as greenhouse effect. The trapped is reflected back. As less heat escapes into space, there has been a steady increase of temperature in recent years. So human action such as burning fossil fuels, deforestation, use of CFCs, heavy use of fertilizes containing nitrogen cause in an increase of greenhouse gases, which result in global warming. Global warming lead to an increase of sea level as glaciers and ice caps melt and this will destroy beaches, erode coasts, flood river deltas and settlements. Homes would be lost. There may be an increase in storms leading to tsunamis and surge flooding. Another climate change is a change in rainfall patterns leading to increase in extreme of temperature, precipitation and dryness in some areas. Desert may expend and drought region may experience a lost in harvest resulting in food shortages. When the ecosystem change due to long-term climatic change, avalanches, forest fires and the spread of tropical diseases may occur. Dengue fever and other insect-borne diseases could spread as global warming creates new areas suitable for the carrier insects. All rainwater is natural slightly acidic. This is because it dissolves carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to make a weak acid. However, the gases emitted from power stations, chimneys, factories and cars also dissolve in rainwater and make it even more acidic. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emitted from burning fossil fuels, which result in rainwater forming dilute sulphuric acid and nitric acid. These gases are carried by prevailing winds from the source of pollution. Acid rain can fall up to 800km form the source of pollution. The harmful consequences on the landscape are many. Crops can be stunted. This is because the soils become acidified and crop yields are reduced as most crops required neutral to mildly alkaline soil. Acid rain kills leave and thus, forests. The acid reacts to the soil and release aluminium compound, which poison the tress. Acid rain corrodes buildings, especially those made of limestone and marble. Acid particles weather stone work in historic building and may even cause eye and throat irritations to people. Acid rains thus have serious effects on human health, plants, animals and materials. ![]() Besides air pollution, water pollution also affects the world drastically. The major cause of water pollution littering and oil spills. Litter can have many effects on the environment. It is extremely unsightly and uncollected litter can attract more. Animals may get trapped or poisoned with litter in their habitats. Litter can end up in rivers and canals, polluting the water supply. Vermin and disease are rife in places with high amounts of litter. Open containers such as paper cups or beverage cans can hold rainwater, providing breeding locations for mosquitoes, which have been known to cause disease like the West Nile Virus. It is also a road hazard and can occasionally contribute to accidents. Litter, a breeding ground for diseases causing insects and rodents, features most prominently for its “ugliness” that damages scenic environments. Trash collects into streams, and storm water drainage systems, flowing into local bays and estuaries. Cigarette butts and filters, a threat to wildlife, have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds and whales, “mistaking them for food” There are many negative effects to the environment as well as to the economy from an oil spill. The toll on sea life is enormous – seabirds are oiled and many eventually die. Thousands of fish, birds, mammals and other marine life are killed. If surfaces of 2170 km of coastlines are polluted by the oil spill, this may take years to allow the marine ecosystem to be in balance again. However, the cold either in Alaska turned the oil on the beach into asphalt. This can be recover for industrial use. Detergents are sprayed onto the oil in the clean up that follows. This will cause further damage to the marine ecosystem and prolong its recovery time as the detergents kill algae and plankton; removing many links in the food chain that exists in the oceans. Fishing ground are close and fish supply decreases. The economy faces a temporary economy recession, as there will be less fishes to be export out of the country. This will also lead to food shortages. The technologies we are using today release different types of pollution on land, water resources and air. All the governments are allocating a lot of research funds to develop new technologies that will eliminate or at least reduce the pollution being generated today without causing any hardship to our lifestyles. Even if such a technology is developed and implemented, it will create new types of pollution itself. Also anyone who has studied human behavior knows that there is really no end to human desires. If a technology to control the pollution in satisfying one desire is discovered and successfully implemented, then we will have another desire that generates much more pollution. Therefore it is impossible to control pollution by developing new technologies to reduce the pollution being caused by existing technologies. I named this Murty's Law on Pollution. As human population keeps on increasing, so does pollution. The following are essential to control pollution: 1. Limit the population, and 2. Adopt simpler lifestyles that will create less pollution in the first place. The idea that some future technology is going to eliminate pollution, change mankind, empower generations, bring the world together and save the environment is just more of the hyped promise of the technology revolution. They are a very nice people. We laugh, we cry, we sing, we dance, we joke and we love each other. Today is HARI RAYA AIDUL FITRI!!!... It's a festival where the Muslims celebrate every year after their 1-month of fasting. So the past few days, I have been over at Suria’s place to help on their preparation on Hari Raya. Yesterday, we went to Geylang to get some foods and new Kebaya. Suria got this really nice Kebaya (Malay traditional costume) which cost about s$390. But after all it’s worth buying because it’s really beautiful. So we went like till 1am in the morning and I was too tired that I decided to stay over for a night in her place. This morning, we woke up at 8:30am to go over to the cemetery to visit Baba. We bought some flowers and rose water to be place on her grave. We try to be different from other s by arranging the flowers that we bought in a heart shape which turn out really nice. I hope that Baba was happy with out decoration and out visit. We hope that we will visit her more often. At lunchtime, Suria’s relatives and her parents’ friends came over to celebrate Hari Raya together. The foods were excellent and everyone was happily enjoying themselves. Ps: To my Muslim friends,“Selamat Hari Raya Aidul Fitri. Mohon Maaf Lahir Batin.” Before I end my entry today, I would like to share with you guys some pictures that Suria and I took while we were bored in the room. Some are really interesting. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Comment! (3) | Recommend! Comment! (4) | Recommend! Take a look at my girlfriend!!!... Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Bad day!!!... Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Today was the worse day ever!!!... I wanted to go for ice-skating at Fuji Ice but it was too crowded. When I was at home, Cinly called and asked whether I would like to join her for a movie. So I headed there with a cab. When I reach there, I couldn’t pay the taxi fare with my nets. Which means that I have no bloody money in my nets. So I called Cinly and asked for some cash. The taxi driver is a FUCKER!!!... She has no bloody patience and keeps scolding me and asking me where the hell is my friend and how long is she going to come… and bla…bla…bla… After the movie, I decided to go home with a cab and I can ask my sister to pass me some money to pay for the fare as I have $0 in my wallet. But when I was trying to call my sister, her phone was off. I tired calling the house phone almost 100 times but she was still asleep. I was really angry and didn’t know what to do. I wanted to take the MRT home but I have no cash at all. So after hours and hours waiting, at last my sister gave me a message. I called her and start nagging at her. When I was in the cab, the taxi driver start scolding me again as when I was waiting for my sister to pass me the money for the taxi fare. She took like ages for her to get her ass down. My sister has a problem here! She does things really slow like as if 1 day there is 48 hours. Last week, I told her to pass me $500 to put it in my bank as my bank left a few dollars. But she waited till today for her to do that simple thing. And because of not having money in my bank, I have to get scolded by two taxi drivers today!!!.... These things happen not just once, but almost many many times. Not just about money, but also about the things that she do. She just does things really slow. Ps: Jie, I hope you really change your slow world and PLEASE DON’T OFF YOUR PHONE UNLESS IT’S LOW BATTERY, it’s just irritating if someone want to contact another person urgently but the person is not picking up the phone. 6th day of movie marathon. ![]() ![]() Comment!
