For all the cows..
Beginner's Guide (PDF file)
Today...
Tuesday. 1.13.09 10:54 pm
I am fine, vitamin D deficient, but fine. I need to have an X-ray and go to OBGYN exam tomorrow. Very medical day. I'm feeling much better. I'll go bed early today, after I take my last painkiller.

I wrote some post and joined a new money making website. I don't know if I'll like it, but I'll try it. Debt is not going to repay itself.

AIDS Doctors Jailed Iran
Saturday. 1.10.09 11:34 pm
As people here know, I consider HIV/AIDS a disability. So does the World Health Organization and the Americans with Disabilities Act. So if you have a problem with my position, take it up with them. Trust me, you dont want to take it up with me. But thats a different subject for a different day.

According to Physicians for Social Responsibility, two Iranian AIDS researchers brothers Arash and Kamiar Alaei have been arrested and charged with communicating with an enemy government. Excuse me; I thought that was what you did when you were trying to solve a public health problem. As far as I know, trying to treat HIV is not a crime in any country of the world. What does a virus know about international borders? And can we afford to be affected by them when were trying to stop it?

According to Declan Butler, Of course, viruses dont care which hosts have been talking to members of enemy regimes or friendly ones. Viruses dont care who is a Shiite, a Sunni, or an infidel. Viruses are just looking for a suitable host so they can get to the business of replicating.

Im a health educator, and my reaction to that line of thought was, well, duh. On Monday, at 9am, I am calling the Iranian Mission to the UN. You should call too, and tell them that imprisoning people who want to end the AIDS crisis is a bad idea and a publicity nightmare. Now, the Iranian government has delayed the verdict, which will keep them in jail longer or keep them from being punished, whatever that might entail in Iran. Personally, I dont want to think about it.

The number is 1-212-687-2020. Tell them why you are calling something along the lines of, I want to voice my objection to the trial of the Alaei brothers, on the basis that you have to communicate with other researchers if you want to cure AIDS. I am also going to conduct my own fax zap. For people who dont know what that means, it means either doing it yourself with your own personal fax machine or paying someone $20 or so to repeatedly send the same fax to the same number. I dont have much money, but I figure doing this could count as my tithe for the month. You can fax, too to 1-212-867-7086. The website in support of the doctors is requesting that after you fax or call, you email the doctors support system at [email protected] so they know what you did.

Just when I think the world cant get any more ridiculous or insane, something like this happens and I have to raise my bar on how crazy the world can get. As a health educator, I think this is dangerous. As a person dedicated to ending the AIDS crisis, I think this is dangerous. As a disability rights activist, I think this is dangerous. Basically, as a whole person, I think this is dangerous. As a person concerned with health care, especially health care for the underprivileged and disabled, I urge you to spend 10 minutes on Monday and $10-20 faxing the Iranian government, letting them know the world is watching.

My favorite author is doing a book tour!
Saturday. 1.10.09 4:11 pm
I adore Margret Preterson Haddix. She's this amazing author of book for young people with none pathetic young women. I hate pathetic women. Science fiction used to be the only genre with non-pathetic women when I was growing up.

She's doing a book tour, which is odd because she's been a bit of a recluse in the several years I've been following her work. I will go to wherever the book tour is happening, even if I need to spend a little money getting there.

Lost assistant found and other things
Friday. 1.9.09 11:24 pm
I talked to Amy today. I'm glad she's not dead. She was just feeling overwhelmed and sick and reacted badly to it. As she's 18, just a kid really, I opted to put her back on relief shifts. Not what she wanted (she wanted her job back), but if she does well in that I'll let her have someone's shift when they leave. I'm kind of a softy, I suppose, and she's just a kid (the same age as my students, when I used to have students- sigh, I don't miss grad school; I do miss teaching).

I edited my poem. May helped. She's a brilliant poet, in her own right, although I'm better at synonyms and grammar than she is (if I do say so myself).

I talked to Sally today and we dealt with PMN stuff. I also signed a petition protesting the Academy Awards plan to give Jerry Lewis a Humanitarian Award. Many disabled people, myself included, object to his portrayal of people with disabilities (that we're pathetic, helpless, and sitting around the house waiting for a cure). Today...
Thursday. 1.8.09 11:59 pm
Hi Everybody,

I had a long day. Interviews that went well; I'm totally hiring two people. One's a fellow poet and one is a dog breeder. This is the easiest hiring I've ever had. I hope they both turn out to nice and normal. I'm getting a new food stamps card tomorrow. I'll need to keep track of this one; I'll be by 3rd.
