some poetry
Desiderata

1927 Max Erhmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
working
Friday. 2.11.05 11:32 am
Sometimes I think I look forward to work more than classes. At least at work, I get paid to do my homework and piss around on the computers!

This last weekend was a riot. Two words: binge drinking!

LET'S PLAY A FUN GAME OK?
Wednesday. 2.9.05 8:49 am
It's called "guess who is really fucking annoyed that he's somehow not getting paid on Friday even though he asked about this last week and they told him he WAS getting paid this week."

Or we could play the one "guess who is getting extremely tired of people telling him to wait/work another week before he sees a cent of it."

here is an update.
Friday. 2.4.05 7:27 am
I would like you all to know that in the last week or so, few bad things have happened. I am doing well in school, I have a good bunch of friends, and I am rarely without something to do. My job is paying me well and I like the work, and few times have I had to turn down something fun because it costs money. I recognize it's only 4 weeks into the semester, but this is a really good start!

These drama-less updates are pretty boring, huh?

chalk one up for doing your homework
Wednesday. 2.2.05 12:58 pm
When I was eating lunch, a couple of people in my bio class asked me if I'd done my paper, and I said no, I thought it was due next week. They looked at me funny and said that it was due today and I was quite surprised and a little distressed. I didn't need to be getting behind on my homework this early in the semester, you know? So I finished my lunch and went back to my room to check just exactly what assignment it was that I had missed.

It turns out that I had not only not missed any assignments, but I'd already finished the paper in question and turned it in the day it was assigned so that I wouldn't have to worry about it for today's class! Something about this feels pretty cool.

as you will see
Tuesday. 2.1.05 7:06 am
I started over. There are a hundred ways to cover my redneck past, I know, I know, but this is over. The "college-ruled" part of my life is over, and the past is the past and it's hard to let go of but sometimes you have to take things as they come. Cherish the good times and lament the bad times but never mourn of their passing, because all things pass.

I've got my feet on the ground, and nobody's going to take that from me now.
