some poetry
Desiderata

1927 Max Erhmann

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
THIS BREAK RULES.
Wednesday. 3.9.05 11:11 am
OMFG. Where do I even start?

- I got a 20 GB iPod for my birthday from my dad and stepmom. Awesome.
- I didn't even go anywhere on my birthday because all my rides petered out. Not their fault, not mine. Not awesome.
- I went to Thrad's house on Monday. AWESOME.

That was the best time ever, seriously. So awesome. We got down there and had a whole bunch of errandy things to do, which we did. I bought my first legal alcohol at a spirits store, and the guy was like "Can I see some ID?" and I was like "Rock you like a hurricane, yes you frickin can see my ID!" Actually it was more mundane but this is a story ok? Thrad and I got Smirnoff Vodka, a big bottle of Triple Sec, two tiny bottles of Goldschlager, and this awesome peppermint kick-you-in-the-titties-from-the-inside schnapps called Rumple Minze. It was liberating. Then we went to the mall for the third fucking time in four weeks so I could trade those damn Pac Sun pants back in. I finally got the ones I wanted (read: ones in the color and style I liked in the right size), except I had a moral dilemma on my hands: they were the kind that came pre-fucked-up from the factory. I have been an outspoken opponent of these jeans because you're an asshole if you buy jeans that are already screwed up. So I gave in and said fuck it because I liked how they fit. Thrad and I got checked out by I think it was like four older women during our 15 minutes at the mall, one of whom was a good butterface. But it was funny, Thrad's so into his girl he didn't even pay any attention. Hear that Brooke? Anyway, after the mall we went back and got some Rose's Lime and Grenadine juices, and then we went BACK to the liquor store plaza to get a movie, some Captain Morgan, and some Coke. While we were in the video store renting Napoleon Dynamite GOSH, there was this thing set up for a Helen Keller Foundation charity thing, and those who know me know that Helen Keller jokes are the funniest thing ever to me. So I cracked a joke and the manager of the store told me we were going to hell, and laughed right along with us.

By the way, why did Helen Keller fall out of the tree?
Because she's dead.

After that we went back to Thrad's house and just chilled for a few hours. We had such great conversations too... it's been such a long time since he and I hung out by ourselves, without us making someone else the third wheel, that we couldn't shut up about anything! We talked about psychology and philosophy and music and video games and all things of the sort. There was much guitar playing and laughing at funny videos, and total like mutual communion of ideas about life and love. There's a reason Thrad is one of my best friends, and that's it right there. It took a couple of tries getting right, but man, the friends I have right now are the best ones ever. I love all of them like my brothers.

THEN WE STARTED DRINKING!! I think there is little that needs to be said about that, except we thought Rumple Minze was gonna go down a lot easier than it did and we are glad for it. There's nothing like 100 proof alcohol to kick you in the face 100 times until you like it. I remember Thrad talked to Brooke, and I talked to Hot Lock Haven Girl, and sometime between that and ordering pizza, we fell asleep. Also I recommend the shot called German Mouthwash: 1/2 Goldschlager, 1/2 Rumple Minze.

Woke up the next day with absolutely no hangover. Then my mom and Roger called and there was some confusion about how I was getting back, but we finally got it straightened out. Mom and Kat showed up, and Thrad and I and them all went out to Olive Garden, where I purchased my first legal beverage with a meal in public: a glass of Grand Marnier which happened to complement absolutely nothing on my plate or bowls but it doesn't matter anyway. It was a rite of passage. Later my dad remarked that it was a pretty sophisticated drink for a beginner. Beginner! HA. Anyway, after that, we dropped Thrad off and came home. Good times and good friends, brother.

Later that night I talked to Hot Lock Haven Girl (as I've been calling her) for like four hours, and two vodka gimlets into that I started to feel a little intoxicated and by I little I mean a lot. So that was a blast. And the end of this section. If she's reading this, go 612. :)

- I was supposed to work a little bit this week but I wasn't able to. Not awesome.
- However I emailed my super today:

I emailed Tom Wilson to apologize for not calling on Tuesday, since as you just read, I was doing things on Tuesday and couldn't get to a phone or work. I expressed some concerns, namely that I was gonna be behind on my projects when I got back and that my not working over break was going to reflect poorly on me getting my summer job. He emailed me back like an hour later to tell me that it was no problem at all and that he was actually taking some days off, and that my summer job was safe. Let's say that again:

I GOT THE SUMMER JOB!!

Dave's a little pumped about this. And by a little I mean a lot.

Okay, so yeah, the last three days have been like the awesomest days of my life. All that is left to do for this break is get together with Rich and have some beers at Doc's, and write my philosophy paper rough draft. After that, I go back to school, talk to PSECU about a loan for a car, get some insurance, and then it's pretty much about staying on top of school and work. I'm buying a car before the end of the semester, and the only other goal is Dean's List. Since I kinda slacked a little bit before midterms, I'm gonna have to bust ass. But it can be done and I'll show you all.

Total complaints for this spring break: 1: IT'S FUCKING COLD OUT HERE. START ACTING LIKE SPRING GOD DAMN IT.

Peace out, folks.

happy birthday to me!
Sunday. 3.6.05 9:54 am
Today I am 21. My plans for the day involve going down and hanging out with Thrad and checking out the Jazz Brunch thing that the Bullfrog offers, and then hanging with him for a day or two. We will see how it all pans out.

lime coke
Sunday. 2.27.05 12:27 pm
So Coca-Cola Inc. has finally decided to market non-diet Lime Coke. Here's a comprehensive taste test:

It's kinda okay. The lime flavor isn't really all that present until I've burped. And burps don't taste all that hot. This soda would probably be really good with rum, or much colder (the stuff I have is room temperature).

I give it a 6.5/10 because it's pretty boring.
