Daily Hip-Hop News:Ludacris & DTP Give Exclusive Concert for Cingular
    Thursday. 8.31.06 10:21 am
Thursday - August 31, 2006 by Anthony Roberts Ludacris Ludacris, along with fellow DTP members Bobby Valentino and Shareefa recently gave a performance that will be available exclusively to Cingular Wireless customers. The concert, which was held yesterday (August 30) at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC, is part of the Cingular Sounds Live concert series. The series is developed specifically to provide mobile content for Cingular customers and is made available through their on-demand streaming video service, Cingular Video. "Advanced technology has found a new way to break through to the audience, and DTP is proud to be doing this live concert for the Cingular audience," Ludacris said. "It seems like almost everyone has a personal cell phone today, from parents to teenagers, and this is such a great way to connect with our audience directly. In many ways, it's almost like having your own private concert." Fans can catch the concert in its entirety simply by viewing it from their Cingular wireless phones. Luda is just the latest artist to bless the stage for the wireless service. To date, Cingular Sounds Live has featured performances by top recording artists such as Rihanna, Pussycat Dolls, Daddy Yankee, Jamie Foxx and LeToya. In related news, Luda is getting ready to drop his latest album, Release Therapy, on September 26. The CD includes the Pharell-assisted single "Money Maker" which is currently in rotation on both radio and video countdowns. The disc will also feature appearances from R.Kelly, Shawnna, Bobby Valentino, Shareefa and Field Mob, with production from Kanye West, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Rick Rubin and the TrackStarz.

Mike Jones is the Ultimate Hu$tler
    Thursday. 8.31.06 10:24 am
SOHH...let's talk about this Mike Jones movie, "The American Dream." As you probably know, Jones is working on a new movie to accompany his sophomore set , The American Dream: Work on the film American Dream was scheduled to begin earlier this week and will continue shooting through September 15th. The film will recount Jones' true life climb from relative obscurity to worldwide fame in the music business. Jones and crew are filming in his native Houston. Meanwhile, Jones is also working on his new album, which will also be named American Dream. (SOHH News) There are so many ways to poke holes on this exceptionally "original" idea (sarcasm), but I won't. Mike's doing what's in his best interest, seeing as many people have now caught on to his gimmicks. And as that happens, he tries to switch things up a bit. (Case in point: My boy who goes to Club Ice Age a lot told me that Jones is now giving out his new phone number. ) Shooting a big budget biopic is probably the only way to ensure that his sophomore set will at least surpass brick mode. No matter what you think of his rap skills, Mike's entrepeneurial spirit should not be underestimated. This guy basically figured out how to make 1 million people buy his record while spitting some of the most cringe-worthy rhymes hip-hop has ever heard. If that ain't a hustler, then what the f*ck you call that? Respect due.

    One-on-One: The Makings of Monica
    Thursday. 8.31.06 10:50 am
By Ivory M. Jones, BET.com Staff Writer Posted August 30, 2006 -- Singer Monica Arnold has come a long way since she burst onto the scene in 1995 as a sassy 14-year-old with a grown-up voice. Over the past 11 years, she’s released three platinum albums and is preparing to drop her fourth, “The Makings of Me,” on Sept. 19. The voice behind “Don’t Take It Personal,” “The Boy Is Mine” and “So Gone” talks to BET.com about what makes her new album different from the rest and how the new man in her life has changed her. :: AD :: Tell us about your new single, “Everytime Tha Beat Drop.” Monica: My first single is produced by Jermaine [Dupri], and we've been friends for a long time. We're a real representation of what Atlanta is like. I wanted to bring something on the scene that talks a little bit about Atlanta culture, how we dance and a lot of little things that the world is starting to see, and incorporate snap music into that, so we came up with "Everytime Tha Beat Drop.” Tell us about the album’s title, “The Makings of Me.” Monica: It was hard to name the album, but this was the best title for it. It’s a diary of the last 11 years of my life, so it’s hard to group that all into one thing that makes sense. The second single is called “Dozen Roses,” and it was produced by Missy. It has a Curtis Mayfield sample in it that’s called “The Makings of You.” I felt like everything that I’m talking about, whether it’s in the now or the past, were the makings of me, how I am, who I am and what I represent. That’s where the title came from. Who did you work with on the album? Monica: I worked with people who are friends of mine and a couple of new people. Sean Garrett, Tank, Bryan Michael Cox, Jermaine, Missy and that was it. It was a nice small setting of people I could really allow to listen to a lot of different things about me. A lot of my songs were written off poems that I had written at different periods of my life. A lot of the things we pulled from are personal, which is why I didn’t work with a lot of producers. It’s been three years since your last album. Is there any apprehension about returning to the scene when it seems like artists drop albums nearly once a year? Monica: I’m a firm believer that we all do what we do; everybody has their own time. I watch people put out albums back to back, but that’s never been my way. I think I’ve always loved to keep a certain sense of normality, so when I’m not working, I like to be able to go back to Atlanta and have things be really normal. It keeps you humble and it keeps you appreciative. As far as the break that I took for this album, it was kind of mandatory because I was pregnant. I was still performing at five months, and I don’t think anybody even noticed. By the time I had my son, I just dedicated myself to that first year of his life because I felt like he needed that undivided attention from me. That is my main concern every day when I wake up; everything else is secondary. :: NEW PAGE :: Has becoming a mother affected your subject matter or how you dress? Monica: My son, Rodney, completely changed my perspective on everything. First of all, I find that it’s easier for me to work and take things in stride because I don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. On top of that, I think it makes me more conscious of things that I do. Like I’ve always had quite a rowdy temper — as a lot of people probably know [laughs]. But I have two sides, and I’ve kind of narrowed it down to one side because I’d like for him to feel like I’m setting an example. Also, I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, but I’ve also made a lot of good choices. I think me being able to go through a lot of things, work in this industry and still be able to adapt to a lot of different things will allow me to share that with him. What are some differences fans may notice between this album and your previous ones? Monica: This album has more storytelling than the others. I think that now, since I’m able to understand some of the things that have taken place in my life, I’ve been able to put enough stuff in perspective and find a way to tell a story in three minutes. So as you go through the album, song by song, I walk you through the last 11 years, step by step. I think that’s the biggest difference. It’s not just random songs on the CD. It’s really a story that I’m telling from beginning to end.

    Diddy Catching Heat From 50
    Thursday. 8.31.06 10:58 am
If you haven't heard the 50 cent diss to Diddy yet check it here. WTF is this dude so pissy about? Sounds like he's just salty about the Mase deal not going down with Puff. He loses serious cool points for being this damn mad over some Mase. But anyways, in the diss 50 makes sure to let everybody know that G-Unit IS hip-hop and Puff aint shit. 50 said Puff knows damn well who killed Biggie. He then talks about how he doesn't want to do a deal anymore, let alone go to his annual white party. And I quote, "I don't wanna hang out with ya punk ass no way...I'll f*ck yo shit up...You cazy n*gga?" And to top it all off, 50 said he's threatening to tell everybody what Misa (Puff's baby momma) supposedly told him. I'm sure that has something to do with those DL rumors floatin' around about Diddy. So Puff hit up Hot 97 yesterday playing it cool about this whole diss record. He said 50's still invited to the white party and there are no hard feelings. Whateva Puff. Clearly he's just picking his battles.

Passed Your STD Test? Get a Safe Sex Certificate
    Thursday. 8.31.06 11:30 am
By: Bomani Jones August 29, 2006 Brooklyn’s Eli Dancy had grown tired of seeing rates of HIV infection increase in African-American males. His solution—the Safe Sex Certificate. Dancy’s company, STFree Certifications, offers the certificate, a card that fits in a wallet, as a way for people to instantly show the dates and results of their last two HIV tests. If someone is tested by STFree, their results are stored by the company. The results can be verified by calling a toll-free number that’s available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Print Email Comment Dancy, a veteran of the adult entertainment industry, started STFree to combat the rise in the number of people infected with sexually transmitted diseases, specifically HIV. “The continuing rise in the number of HIV infected people is not unavoidable,” he says. “As an African-American male, I wanted to prove that prevention efforts can be truly effective with this easy-to-use initiative.” The Centers for Disease Control and the New York State Board of Health agree with Dancy. Both groups recognize and have approved the Safe Sex Certificate.
