Capital Pride...pink on parade!
Monday. 6.16.08 3:11 pm
After working a ridiculous double Friday night, we literally had 3 hours to come home, pack, and get back to the airport. Running like crazy, we cyclones through the apartment and managed to make the flight to DC via PIT and BWI. You see, Southwest doesn't fly from PHL to IAD (DC), so we had to catch the flight to BWI from PIT..then the bus/train combo from BWI to downtown DC. It was an adventure to say the least, but how else do you get to DC for $3 a piece!? We bummed around for a couple hours getting a feel for Dupont Circle before meeting up with the Southwest gang, checking in to the Hilton (yay free room!), much needed showers, then back to the restaurant to head to the parade. About that time the baking heat turned to rain. I tell you, I'd take an hour and a half on a float in the rain over in the baking sun any day. We were, however, completely soaked to the bone by the time we were done, but hey what's hotter than a soaking wet girl you're pretty sure is a lesbian dancing on a float throwing beads? I got a couple flashes, some nice smiles, and a tiny little bottle of Bacardi. The float consisted of five tiers of foot and a half radius disks, which is what we stood on to throw beads and peanuts . I was pretty proud of myself for making it to the third tier before the vertigo kicked in. That's where I decided to stay. Ryan, on the other hand, climbed to the top tier like the monkey he is. Unfortunately there's an abundance of low tree branches in DC, and the parade route ran through all of them. Poor boy! What we saw of the remainder of the parade was pretty nice. I really do want to go back next year. After the parade we headed back to t he hotel to dry off. I wasn't feeling well so I napped for a little while before we headed out to the Pride Party at a nearby club. We stayed there for about an hour and a half before I felt too sick and crowded to stand. It was fun while it lasted though. I danced with a few girls, watched a couple dance circles. All in all a good time.
Sunday morning breakfast delivery woke us up. We ate and stayed in the nice big bed for a while before heading to the festival. Despite broiling on the sidewalk, the festival was really nice. I wish we could've stayed longer, but we had to catch a 330 train from IAD, which meant a bus at 130. This trip took us through MDW (Chicago), where we had an hour and a half and STILL almost missed the plane. oops. We did make it home on the earlier flight, so I was able to get a few hours of sleep before I had to be at work at 4am..

I'm really happy Ryan went out to do this with me, and that we got to have a whole lot of fun with people from my company. We had a blast, and we needed the vacation, no matter how short or hectic.

and now...a nap.

i guess this gives me a year to find a nice pair of pants
Friday. 6.13.08 11:38 am
I didn't even have time to post about my interveiew before I found out I did not get the job. They didn't like the way I answered one question, and said the slit in my skirt was too high. Three people saw me in this skirt, and no one mentioned to me that it might be inappropriate. I guess I should have seen it. It is, however, the same skirt I wore to the LUV at First Bite Luncheon where I met Colleen...and she never mentioned it being too short. In fact, I do remember her saying to me (I was sitting at her table and met her a few times) how we (being the people in the group standing around the table with her) looked nice, and how great it was to see us all dressed up and looking professional. So...inflight has higher standards than Colleen...check!

Chicago itself was great, aside from Nicky having a case of the Mondays. I got in on time and made it to Cat's with no event. As soon as I walked in Nicky exclaimed to me, "I'm potty trained!" several times. Thirty minutes later he wet himself on our walk to the grocery store. Don't count those chickens yet, Nicky. He's also started to build giant monoliths out of big, tiny-hand sized "leggos"...so we're working on the words "Washington Monument". In any case, we went to get food for dinner, and in t hat time Nicky managed to step un a puddle, wet himself, fall flat on his face, find a balloon, and pop said balloon. Like I said...case of the Mondays. Once we got home he ate, played for a bit, bathed, and read a few stories with us before bedtime. Cat and I hung around catching up, and eventually Erich came for the baby and the three of us sat around talking for a while.

The interview was almost successful. I thought it went really well. I got back to MDW just in time for the earlier flight home and slept all the way. Ryan and I got dinner at Johnny Rocket's before heading home to get some cleaning done. We did that for a couple days since I had off work until today. His mom came over yesterday for a couple hours, so we took her to Potbelly's.

I'm working a double today, and tomorrow we head out for a weekend in DC...if we can find a place to stay..hah.

busy bee
Saturday. 6.7.08 12:19 pm
By the end of this week I will have worked 7 shifts ( 60something hours)..including my 17hour day tomorrow! Wooohooo supershift! Unfortunately long day means missing the Philadelphia Pride parade/festival, but we'll be in the parade for the one in DC next weekend. The float master seemed pretty confused that my husband and I listed ourselves as "part of the community" instead of "supporters". Hah. It lead to an interesting conversation abou the dynamics of a bisexual marriage. Anywho, it'll be the first non-formal company event Ryan will be attending. it should be fun...although we may end up pulling an all nighter if we can't find somewhere affordable to sleep, hah.

I got my hair trimmed last night...Ryan got his...well..shorter than he'd have liked...his mom got a little distracted, hah.

Home today for a nap after work in preparation for uber day tomorrow.

Try to stay out of the heat, everyone!

gallery shows and webcomix
Friday. 6.6.08 10:25 am
so it looks like the best way to iad is flying, since the tip i got about megabus doing to DC was erroneous...not sure how we're getting from the airport to the parade hdq since i can't open scott's attachment to see where that is. i hope he emails me back soon so we can sort this out and find a cheap place to stay. meh! i was hoping we could beg a couch or floor from him or another co-worker hah.

i think i decided on a combination of animals and sylvian fantasy shots for the gallery show...or just animals depending on what i get to shoot between now and august. could change. if you DONT know, i've got a show in west chester in august at gallery t on gay st. :) it runs all month...go see it! i'll post more info about the opening reception when i know. the girl who owns it has some great work. it makes me itchy to shoot...now if only i could find the inspiration and a subject! i cant get mm at work, but maybe i can make a post when i get home.

on another, closer to home, note...webcomics need to not make me cry...if you read ctrl+alt+dlt you know what i mean and why it makes me sad. i'm immersed and enthralled...but also sad...i'm pathetic in that i cry more for webcomics and books than i do for most people...hah. i guess i handle real life issues better because they're not fiction, and you don't draw real life, so it's not maleable like a webcomic is. people write this stuff to be sad, and that makes my heart break for the fictional characters. ryan says i'm buying trouble. i can't help my heart bleeds for people, real or not.

work..a behavioral study
Sunday. 6.1.08 3:37 pm
I sit and stare at a pack of passengers stalking the baggage carousel waiting to pounce the moment their bags come out from hiding in the tunnel below the terminal. They've followed them here, 300 miles to wait for them some more. Families huddle together as if stranded on the tundra. Businessmen loom like lone wolves, and gaggles of girls in their late teens to early twenties swarm like high pitched killer bees. One by one bags emerge like cranes in a swooping parade only to be picked off, one by one, by their hungry predators. This is my day. Eight hours of the hunt. Now I know how research scientists feel.

contastic!
Sunday. 6.1.08 10:48 am
My weekend started Thursday with a long day of phone calls and cleaning to distract myself from the fact that I felt like, and still feel like, I was dying. While I was on the phone with Comcast a woman from MDW called to set up my inflight interview for June 10! I cleaned all day, trying to keep my numbers somewhat sane, an endeavour which fails even today...thank gods I have an appointment tomorrow. In the course of my cleaning I somehow lodged, rather deeply, a big ugly splinter in the ball of my foot, which I dug at for an hour before it finally admitted defeat. Remember this fact, dear readers. I will come back to haunt us. Ryan got home from work, and after a bunch of to-do we drove to Sumac St to retrieve the computer and assorted other left-behinds. We are now officialy 110% moved! Friday Ryan hit the streets early to register the car while I stayed home, once again cleaning and trying not to land myself in the ER. My goal was the bank, but I decided against it in favour of a few extra hours of sleep. I got a ton finished with the apartment, and at 1800hrs we officially had internet, cable, and phone! Woohoo! It was then that we decided to take a celebratory trip downtown for dinner and general mayhem, so we gussied up and headed out for a much needed let-it-loose night. Halfway through the night my foot felt like I was walking on tiny steak knives OF FIRE! We limped me home, got me in the shower to make sure the gorge in my foot was clean, and went to bed, for Saturday was to be a very early morning.

Yesterday we roused and ran to the train, or swiftly hobbled in my case, in order to make it to the Convention Center by 9am. We spent the day answering questions and peddling wares at the giant t-shirt menagerie at Wizard Con...also known as the stylinonline.com booth. Why? Because it was a free badge to the con is why. In exchange for being connies (con carnies..hah) we got free admission, $15 in cash and $20 in merch per shift. Not a bad deal, all in all. It allowed us a little extra cash, a few hours to bum around the show, and some free shot glasses and t-shirts (because we all know that's what we need...more t-shirts with snarky sayings on them). Had the opportunity to get at least a quick "hi" and a hug from a friend I haven't seen in years (who better make time to hang out next time he's in town...or there WILL be consequences), which was great. Ryan got information about apprenticing with a blacksmith, and I found a gorgeous new tarot deck I'd like to pick up today when I go back. After the show we hid Santa Fe Burrito for well..burritos and caught the train home. All day I'd been a little sick, and the last hour or so of walking around exacerbated my foot and my sick to almost an unbearable point. I made the hobble home, but we did not make my hair appointment with Ryan's mom. Instead we watched Underdog while Ryan operated on my foot. The splinter from Thursday had been more stubborn than I'd thought, and was still half lodged in my foot...extremely deeply. It took the entirely of the movie to dig it out and clean up what had grown into a pretty nasty pit in my foot, and by the time he was done I was exhausted and ready for bed. I was pretty sick all night, but my keytones aren't growing, so that's a good sign.

Ryan's back at T-shirt Mountain working today until I get out of work. I'm meeting him there for a little more perusing, and we've been rallied to help break down the booth after the show. I'd like to get my deck and maybe a couple GN's I saw. I wish I could justify the D20 double flail...but probably not. I've also got to decide on my tshirt...I've got a few in mind (including the Serenity Companion Academy shirt and a great Princess Bride shirt..ahh the important decisions). I'd been looking for a new dice set, but I think that'll wait. In any case, we're back there tonight, I've got anappointment tomorrow with my endo, then it's a LONG week culminating in a 0430-2145 day on Sunday, Monday night in MDW, and my interview on Tuesday. Read: Hole-LY shit!

Ok, I'm going to sign off now...this has gotten long enough...but before I do, I'd like to welcome Baby Ava, who was born at 6something this morning! Welcome Ava and many good thoughts to Lindsay and Darren!
