Here's the article.

Yay I got quoted

Here's my original response:

What are the most common computer problems that residents call you with?
Spyware and viruses. Mostly spyware, because the newer versions of Symantec that VT distributes (and other antivirus programs) will catch it, but since the antivirus program catches it, most people label it as a "virus". I don't see too many actual viruses. After these, most of my calls are about connectivity issues, though they are usually caused by viruses and spyware.

If residents do call you with broken computers, what do you tell them to do?
It depends on how it's broken. If they tell me its making odd noises, then usually it's a hardware problem, and I let them know that. I arrange an appointment to make sure, and let them know their options as far as getting the hardware replaced. If it's a software issue, I'll tell the resident to run a few programs that can be found on antivirus.vt.edu, and call back to make an appointment if running those programs didn't fix the problems.

Do you refer them to the bookstore?
Usually only if they have a warranty with the bookstore and it's something I can't fix. If their machine is out of warranty, I let them know that the bookstore is there, but I also let them know of other options as well.

What software do you recommend to extend the life of a computer?
If the computer's going to die, it's going to die. It's a good idea to have anti-spyware and antivirus programs like Spybot, Ad-aware, Microsoft AntiSpyware, Hijack This, Symantec Antivirus, a good firewall, back- up software (as well as media to back up onto). These will usually the computer from dying prematurely from viruses, spyware, some hacking, and other software related causes of death. If someone really wants to and tries hard enough, they can take control.

It's probably time to get a new computer when you can't run any of the necessary protection programs, or if it costs more to fix/upgrade your current machine. Or if you send it off for repairs, the repair company takes more than a semester to get it back to you, and when you do get it back, it's not yours. Chances are they won't be able to rectify the problem, and you can get a new machine.

It's also important to buy an external back up drive of some sort, so when the inevitable trip to computer heaven comes, you won't have lost your data.

Which brands do you frequently see with the most problems?
Dell, but only because so many people have them. If fewer people had them, there wouldn't be any difference between the brands.

Also, what exactly do you all do as RCCs?
We troubleshoot and/or fix resident's computers and related problems.

Can you possibly send me other RCCs
names and if there is anyone who works like, as your boss/supervisor,
can you send me their names too?

I have several bosses, though the one I normally correspond with is Anne Sheppard.
Since I am also part of Residence Life, I also keep in touch with the Slusher Complex Director, Laurica Yancey.
There's a listing of all of the RCCs, their contact information, and hours at http://computing.vt.edu/help_and_tutorials/rcc/index.html .
