a quick blog on books
Thursday. 12.1.16 9:40 pm

I'm devouring books, as of late.

The Night Circus is really fun as an audiobook; Jim Dale--the narrator for the Harry Potter series, too--does a spectacular job, but, sometimes, it's kind of weird when he tries to do voices for feminine characters. Either way, people say the book itself is insufferably dwindling...the audiobook moves so well, I hardly noticed. I think someone said the whole thing was thirteen hours, but it felt like maybe four.

OH, and I just read The Paper Magician, which, apparently, is being made into a movie? That's what R tells me. This book came as a result of my interest on Amazon in The Night Circus, so I don't just have a thing for books about magical worlds...once I like one book from a theme, though, I tend to pursue that theme, for a while. I read these two, and then the first two books of Harry Potter (can you believe I've never read those?) within the past two weeks, along with three novels outside of the theme, and I am STARVING for more Audible credits, more money to spend on Kindle books. The Paper Magician is in a trilogy, and the first book was free through Amazon Prime (btw, Amazon Prime now lets you read a buttload of books for free, with the one issue that many of these books are part of a series, all of which is not free. Pain), but the second one is $5, and I've promised myself that I won't waver even a step off my savings plan. I'm doing really well, and it's because I'm so strict with myself.

The Paper Magician is about this young magician-to-be, and she is bonded with only the ability to use magic on paper; everyone works like that--some can do glass, some metal, etc. etc. She has to become an apprentice to someone who is already a magician under that same medium...and then a bunch of stuff happens, all of that stuff being spoilers. It's good. I'm really loving my book intuition, lately; I returned my racist-ass, repetition-loving Lovecraft audiobook for The Night Circus on a whim (after deciding to return just for the sake of not wasting a credit, that is), and it worked out wonderfully...and, a few months ago, I found a book called Metro 2033 (post-apocalyptic Russian metro tunnels, super philosophical, downright unnerving) OUT OF NOWHERE, and it turned out to be a huge obsession for both myself and my S.O. ...AND his dad. His dad got into it, too. They made a video game, and they're making a movie; the guy who worked on Blade Runner is also working on this.

This is what I had time to say, but it isn't all I have going on by a long shot. For another time.

Hmm, well I can try to give an example:

Since I have a bit of familiarity with crisis hotlines, let's say you're a crisis hotline volunteer who answers the phones and talks to the callers. You start out with a strong desire to help people, and are determined to treat all the callers with respect and compassion. You imagine listening patiently to distressed people and offering comfort to them, which they appreciate. What you find instead is that a lot of callers are rude, have problems beyond the scope of what you can address, and/or are ungrateful for the time you put in talking to them, telling you that you're no good and they don't like you. After volunteering for awhile, you notice that you don't really care about the work as much as you used to; you sign up for shifts, but it's starting to seem kind of like a burden, and you find yourself getting annoyed with some of the callers, whereas before you tried to have a lot of sympathy for them. You notice that you're starting to care less about other things in your life, too; you get irritated with your friends and family more easily, and you feel like things in your life don't seem to have much of a point anymore. It seems like no matter how much you try to live up to your values, nobody cares and none of your efforts make a difference. You find yourself feeling like it's a waste of time to volunteer, and like most people don't really deserve the help they're given anyway.

Hopefully that illustrated what burnout is like in more concrete terms.

It's been overcast today and yesterday, but it was actually sunny for the first few days after I got back from winter break. It might be stress-related, but that's my best guess so far.
