7 bad habits of overweight people

My weight keeps going up and down like a yoyo and it is so frustrating. For my height I am considered overweight by... too many pounds to mention. I work out at 24 hr. fitness and these are some of the bad habits of overweight people:

1. They don't exercise regularly.

Dylan Gautreaux, fitness manager for 24 Hour Fitness in Carrollton, Texas, recommends two to three cardio sessions per week of 20 to 45 minutes and two to three resistance training sessions per week of 30 to 45 minutes. He says resistance training will build muscle that helps burn fat.

2. They eat most of their meals out.

"Restaurant portions are enormous and most of us were brought up to belong to the clean plate club," says LouAnn Frisch, a dietitian in Portland, Oregon. She says that Mexican and Chinese restaurants probably have the highest calorie meals, but if you must eat out: "Thai and Vietnamese foods are better. Pho soups and won-ton soups are great choices." [Pho, pronounced "fa," is a Vietnamese soup that's usually made with beef.]

3. They always eat a second portion.

"It really does take 20 minutes for your brain to catch up with your stomach. But most people consume high amounts of food in 20 minutes," says Frisch. She acknowledges that it's difficult to slow down, but suggests putting less food on your plate and skipping seconds.

4. They avoid even light activity.

"There are little things that you can do to lead a more active lifestyle," says Gautreaux. "Take breaks and get some fresh air instead of sitting at your desk all day. There are even stability balls made to sit behind a desk instead of a chair. These cause you to sit up straight, hold your back up and burn more calories."

5. They never turn down sweets.

Frisch doesn't recommend cutting out sweets completely, just cutting down on them: "If you need chocolate, have some. Not a lot, just some. But savor it and be happy with a small portion."

6. They eat even when they're not hungry.

"Eating is a physiologically and psychologically satisfying, mood-altering experience. Most people eat, not because they are hungry, but for other reasons," says Frisch. Learn what triggers you to eat and healthier ways to reward yourself or brighten your mood.

7. They skip meals.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School found that skipping meals can play a role in obesity. Eating fewer, larger meals may cause insulin to spike, which triggers hunger and could cause more blood sugar to be stored as fat. The study found that people who eat several, smaller meals were less likely to be obese. Overweight people may find it difficult initially to overcome their bad habits, but the results of better eating and exercise habits are very rewarding.

Well I know that I am guilty of numbers 2, 5 and 7. Eating out and skipping meals I can work on.... but take away my chocolate and the world will be sorry. ha ha ha...

The problem with a lot of these bad habits (particularly 1, 2, 5+6, and 3+7) is that they're promoted by the typical American lifestyle, which is to say: work, work, work, rush, rush, rush...

1) If you're working most of the day, even if your job is not at all physically demanding (e.g. sitting at a desk all day), at the end of it all, do you really WANT to go to the gym? You can make yourself go, but let's face it, sometimes at the end of the day, the LAST thing you want to be doing is working out.

2) If you don't have time to cook, you're going to eat out. Either that, or you'll eat one of those microwave dinners. Which, btw, are NOT filling (or remotely tasty compared to restaurant food).

3 and 7) We skip meals when we're too busy. The end result: stuffing our faces when we DO get the chance to eat.

5 and 6) Eating is an enjoyable experience. Eating sweets is an even MORE enjoyable experience. When you're working hard all day, you're bound to feel unhappy sometimes. What better way to do that than by grabbing a handful of M&Ms and throwing them down the hatch?

These are bad habits, that's true. But they're also habits that are hard to break not only because we're so USED to doing them, but because the working American lifestyle is pushing us towards them. Maybe if we changed the way we fundamentally think about how we work most efficiently, the establishment can help to curb these habits in their employees.

If it's a hereditary thing than it's even harder to get rid of...

And I believe there is one supreme solution to conquering an overweight condition, it's fun and it makes you sweat...

Jump rope :P

Ok I had to take a moment to advertise my sport...I do it just for fun sometimes because it's that awesome. I mean I guess it would be boring if all you ever did was speed, but try learning some tricks, it's a surprisingly decent workout.

yeah, most of the time I skip meals because I'm working and don't have time to stop. and with only half an hour for lunch, even if I did get something to eat {with the exception of yogurt or maybe a fruit smoothie} I'd be rushed. so most of the time I'd rather just wait.

and chocolate is just too good to turn down. I have to either be really not hungry or the chocolate I'm being offered is crappy. then I'll turn it down in a heartbeat

1. I need to start doing this. Perhaps when it warms up or I am not in school.

2. I like eating out, and I have this annoying habit of saving half of it, but then I never eat it. Oh well.

3-7. I eat seconds, especially of something I don't have often. I can turn down sweets, too many make me ill. I do #6 fairly often, because if I don't then I will do #7. I'm famous for not eating when I don't know what I want to eat, or because I'm bored, or because it's rainy out... or because the cat blinked...

Also, I'm not overweight per BMI anymore... but I could go for some fitness. The reason 7 is such a problem is because a lot of people skip a meal, but then make up for it later...

This is bad... I fit all seven!!
Though I'm not overweight yet...
